While their younger classmates took part in yearly testing, Rome High School’s senior class got a much-needed break and a chance to let their hair down during the 2021 Senior Picnic.
RHS seniors were treated to a climbing wall, bounce house, and dance tunes courtesy of the Rome’s most popular guy behind the turntables, DJ D-low. Senior counselor Melissa Holland and Todd Ollis, ELA teacher, helped to organize the half-day event to show appreciation for the senior class.
“We host the Senior Picnic every year, and we did not get to have this event last year because of COVID-19 restrictions,” said Holland. “It is usually around the time of year that our sophomore class is taking the PSAT. While our underclassmen are working hard on the PSAT we try to provide some leisure time for our seniors to enjoy themselves.”
Holland said that activities like volleyball, touch football and the playground at Ridge Ferry Park added to the activities planned to keep the seniors entertained. And for those who needed to refuel after a morning of Krispy Kreme donuts, exercise and catching up on the jungle-gym, all students were provided lunch while in the park.
“When we show our seniors that they are important to us, we feel like that follows them after they graduate,” Holland added. “What they have accomplished is not easy and we appreciate them for their efforts.”
Ollis also said that one of the most important things he and his fellow educators can do is never forget to let the students know they are appreciated.
“All of our seniors have worked so hard over the last four years,” Ollis said, “and this is a chance for them to get out and have some fun without thinking about school. They are here today enjoying each other’s company and there are several members of our faculty who are out here having fun with them. We felt that it was important to offer our students a little free time before things get crazy with the holidays and then preparation for graduation. These are some of the best years of their lives, and we want them all to remember the time spent learning at Rome High School.”
