The lanes at Floyd Bowling and Amusement were bustling with Phoenix Performance Learning Center (PLC) students on Thursday March 31, as they reaped their well-earned PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) reward.
PLC English teacher Erin Strickland explained, "Today we are celebrating students who have achieved a PBIS goal of 250 points for good behavior, being respectful, being an owner of their learning, and being engaged in the classroom.”
Strickland explained that the PLC's PBIS mantra is "Be Rome," which stands for being responsible, an owner of their learning, mindful and engaged.
Students dug into some friendly competitiveness as they bowled, enjoyed games in the arcade, and of course some iconic bowling alley nachos.
Strickland explained that with each PBIS incentive the PLC tries to target a specific behavior or goal.
"One thing we really pushed was being at school on time and getting to class on time,” she said. “Another part of that too was just being engaged in their learning, actively participating, and getting their assignments turned in on time. Timeliness and punctuality, in a lot of respects, was a big part of this.”
Principal Dr. Christy Epps further explained, “Attendance is often a challenge for students. Our highlight for the month of March was giving students extra PBIS points for not only getting to school but getting to school on time for first period. If they met our goal level of points, then they were invited to come today.”
Strickland affirmed that the students really showed that they could handle the challenge. More than half of the PLC students earned the points necessary and were able to enjoy a day of bowling.
“These students face a lot of different challenges,” Epps added, “and they need to be recognized for coming to school.
